For the First Time, the IACHR Grants a Specific Thematic Hearing on the Health of Transmasculinities

A coalition of transmasculine organizations from South America obtained a thematic hearing before the IACHR to address the problem of their access to the right to health in the region.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted a thematic hearing to be held on November 12 at 9:00 am (Washington DC time) to Fraternidad Trans Masculina Perú, Hombres Trans Diversos de Bolivia, Instituto Brasileiro de Transmasculinidades – IBRAT Brasil, Fraternidad Trans Masculina Ecuador, and the Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights (Race and Equality) – the petitioners – at its 191st Regular Period of Sessions at the headquarters of the IACHR in Washington D.C. to expose the serious problems related to the right to health of transmasculine people in the region.
This marks a milestone in the fight for the rights of transmasculine people since, for the first time, an IACHR hearing will specifically address the problems that affect the transmasculine population regarding their right to health. The lack of access to hormone treatments and surgeries, systematic discrimination, and institutionalized violence within public and private health systems, as well as the absence of public policies that guarantee physical and mental well-being are some of the points that will be discussed in the hearing.
With this hearing, the Coalition that has been working on the regional Mi salud Transmasculina Importa project, supported by Race and Equality, seeks to highlight these problems before international bodies, demanding concrete measures from States to guarantee the human right to health, based on the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and respect for gender identity. The objective is to promote structural and regulatory changes that build equitable access to health, setting precedents that impact the entire region.
