Isto criou um grande mercado único e, desde 1993, a União Europeia tem abrangido muitos domínios políticos, desde o ambiente e a saúde até às relações externas e à segurança.
O quadro institucional e o sistema de tomada de decisões da UE são constituídos por quatro instituições principais: o Conselho Europeu, a Comissão Europeia, o Parlamento Europeu e o Conselho da UE. Um dos objectivos da União Europeia é a promoção dos direitos humanos, da democracia e do Estado de direito, tanto na política interna como nas suas relações externas.
O nosso trabalho na União Europeia
As instituições e os espaços de participação da UE oferecem mecanismos de defesa para tornar mais visíveis as violações dos direitos humanos nos países da América Latina e das Caraíbas. Nesse sentido, a Raça e Igualdade realiza um trabalho articulado e coordenado de advocacy com outras organizações e redes da sociedade civil perante diferentes formações do Parlamento Europeu, como a Subcomissão de Direitos Humanos, a Comissão de Relações Exteriores e as Delegações para as Relações com regiões e países da América Latina, bem como perante os secretariados dos grupos políticos.
Exerce igualmente pressão junto do Serviço Europeu para a Ação Externa (a entidade da UE que executa a Política Externa e de Segurança Comum da UE e conduz relações diplomáticas com outros países), do gabinete do Representante Especial da UE para os Direitos Humanos e da Direção de Parcerias Internacionais da Comissão Europeia. A nível dos Estados-Membros da UE, o nosso foco de trabalho é o Grupo de Trabalho sobre a América Latina e as Caraíbas do Conselho da UE (COLAC). A Raça e Igualdade também oferece assistência técnica e treinamento a organizações e ativistas na América Latina, facilitando seu acesso às instituições, mecanismos e processos de trabalho da UE.
Atualmente, a Raça e Igualdade tem um representante em Bruxelas, que é responsável por desenhar e executar a estratégia de advocacy da organização perante as instituições da União Europeia e seus diferentes órgãos.
